Katie Pickersgill (b.2003, Worcestershire) lives and works in Bath, UK, studying at Bath School of Art, Film and Media.

As a Non-binary person, Pickersgill uses their practice as a vehicle to express a voice that often feels unheard or underrepresented. Their work intuitively moves between paint and clay-based processes, celebrating and embodying their Queerness. Through their practice, the artist responds to and reflects on current harmful “political” issues, such as the critical decline in support for transgender rights, with a corresponding decrease in LGBTQIA+ rights protections in the UK. For Pickersgill, making art becomes a therapeutic tool - one that helps navigate their shifting mental states, personal experiences, and the ongoing pressures of a binary society. With Conceptual and Abstract Expressionist influences, the artist creates predominantly large-scale, unstretched paintings and unfired, raw clay objects. Their emotional connection to colour and music aids their intuitive process, where they channel their emotions into material, using significant colours and listening to certain music. As an extension of the self, Pickersgill’s work holds space for their own identity and LGBTQIA+ representation by curating large-scale installations, which kindly invite the viewer to immerse themselves within the artist’s own Queer perspective and material exploration.
